Solar Batteries NZ

Store your solar power and use it at night, ride through power cuts, or go fully off grid. We supply SOK 48V LiFePO4 solar batteries and pre-wired Energy Hub systems for NZ homes, baches and farms, stocked in Nelson and shipped NZ wide.

How much battery storage do you need?

It comes down to what you want the battery to do.

    • Use your solar at night: size the battery to cover your evening and overnight use. For many homes that's 10 to 15kWh.
    • Backup for power cuts: size it to run the essentials (fridge, freezer, lights, internet, water pump) for as long as you want to last. 10kWh keeps the basics going overnight in most homes.
    • Fully off grid: size it for two to three days of your normal use with no sun, and plan for June and July, not summer. A bach might need 15 to 25kWh, a full-time home 25 to 50kWh, plus a generator input for long grey spells.

Check your power bill or your power company's app for your daily kWh, then use our battery size calculator to get a number.

    Energy Hub: the ready-to-go option

If you'd rather not design a system from parts, the Energy Hub is a complete battery and inverter system in an outdoor rated cabinet. It arrives pre-wired and tested with Victron inverter-chargers, SOK batteries, solar charge control and monitoring, so your electrician connects the solar, the house and the generator rather than building it all on site.

    • Energy Hub Mini for baches, sleepouts, tiny homes and small off grid sites.
    • Energy Hub Midi for full-time homes and farms, from 10kWh up to 30kWh, with 5 or 8kVA Victron inverters.

“All my electrician had to do was connect the cabinet to my switchboard and everything was up and running.”

“It not only worked, it exceeded my expectations. I was warm and comfortable all winter and that was with the heat pump running every night too.”

    For your installer

We size and supply systems but we don't install them, so your own electrician or one of our preferred installers does the install. Things they'll want to know:

    • Battery systems in NZ are installed to AS/NZS 5139, which covers where the battery can go, ventilation, labelling and isolation.
    • Grid connected systems need your lines company's approval before connection, and the inverter must be on the approved list.
    • We can supply spec sheets, wiring diagrams and Victron settings for SOK batteries and Energy Hubs before the install starts.
    • We're happy to talk through the design with your installer before you buy. Call 022 502 2377.

    Solar battery FAQ

SOK 48V LiFePO4 batteries are rated for 3,000 to 8,000 cycles, which is well over 10 years of daily cycling for most homes, and they carry a 10 year warranty.

Usually yes. It depends on your current inverter. Some hybrid inverters take a battery straight on; others need a battery inverter added alongside. Send us your inverter model and we'll tell you what works.

Only if the system is set up for backup. A battery inverter-charger like the Victron MultiPlus-II switches your essential circuits to the battery when the grid goes down. Not every grid-tie system does this, so ask before you buy.

Enough for two to three days of your normal use with no sun, sized for winter. For a full-time home that's often 25 to 50kWh. Use our battery size calculator for your number.

No. We size and supply the gear and work with electricians and installers around NZ. Use your own electrician, or get in touch and we'll put you onto one.
