SOK and AS/NZS 3004.2 Certification
17 December 2025
The short answer. The SOK 24V 150Ah Marine battery (model SK24V150PH-Marine) is certified to AS/NZS 3004.2. If you are putting lithium in a boat, that is the SOK battery to use.
What AS/NZS 3004.2 is
AS/NZS 3004.2 is the standard that covers electrical installations on boats in New Zealand and Australia. It is a real standard with real requirements, not a sticker, and it is what your surveyor or insurance assessor will ask about.
Plenty of imported drop in lithium gets sold into New Zealand boats without being certified to it. It looks the same on a web page and it is a different thing entirely when an assessor turns up. If you are buying for a boat, ask every supplier for the certification, including us.
What the SOK Marine battery has that our standard range does not
Our earlier batteries had no built in way to warn you before the battery ran flat, which is one of the reasons they were not suitable for a certified boat install. The Marine battery fixes that:
- Bank disconnect output. A dedicated output can disconnect the whole bank if a fault is detected anywhere in it, so a problem in one battery does not become a problem for the whole boat.
- Pre-alarm buzzer. If the battery voltage starts getting low, the buzzer sounds well before anything disconnects, so you have time to start the genset, cut loads or get on shore power.
- Internal fire suppression. A gas aerosol suppression system inside the case.
- IP67 enclosure for water and dust.
- One bank, up to 15 batteries. One master battery reports the whole bank to a Victron Cerbo GX over CAN, with one state of charge and one set of alarms. It also speaks NMEA 2000 for your chartplotter.
It is also certified to IEC 62619 and UN38.3.

What about my existing SOK batteries?
Our 12V and 24V standard batteries are not certified to AS/NZS 3004.2. They are still a great fit for caravans, campers, off grid and home systems, but for a boat house bank use the Marine battery.
The battery is only part of it. The whole installation, including charging, protection and cabling, has to comply with the standard. If you are not sure what you need, get in touch before you order.
